On reaching the foothills at the charming gem of a village in Marpha, famous for delicious apples, Then finally ending the adventurous walks at Jomsom Town, the headquarters of Mustang District. FAQs of Dhaulagiri Round Trek

  • When is the best time for Dhaulagiri Circuit Trek?

The best times for the Dhaulagiri Circuit Trek in Nepal are spring (March-May) and autumn (September-November). These seasons have good weather, clear skies, and nice temperatures for trekking. Spring is warm with pretty flowers, while autumn has clear skies after the rainy season.
  • Do we spend overnights in tented camp?

Yes, during the Dhaulagiri Round Trek in Nepal, it's common to spend nights in tented camps, especially in more remote and less developed areas where there may not be tea houses or lodges available. The trek around Dhaulagiri is known for its rugged and remote terrain, so having camping equipment is essential for some portions of the trek.
  • How tough is Dhaulagiri trek ?

The Dhaulagiri Round Trek in Nepal is tough. It's high up, with rough paths and few people around. Trekkers might get sick from the altitude, walk on rocky ground, and deal with unpredictable weather. Since there aren't many places to stay, you have to bring camping gear. Some parts of the trail have icy spots and steep hills, so it's best for those who have hiked before. But the views are amazing for those who are up for the adventure.
  • Do we carry foods and kitchen equipment’s?

Yes, during the Dhaulagiri trek, especially in the more remote sections where there are limited facilities, it's common for trekkers to carry some of their own food and kitchen equipment. This typically includes basic cooking gear such as a stove, fuel, pots, and utensils, as well as non-perishable food items like rice, noodles, canned goods, and snacks. However, all these items will be carried by the porter. It's essential to plan and pack accordingly to ensure you have enough food to sustain you throughout the trek, especially in areas where there are no tea houses or lodges available.
  • Do we have facilities to charge our electronic gadgets during Dhaulagiri Round Trek?

Trekkers starting the Dhaulagiri trek need to think ahead, especially about charging their devices. They can charge them in Bagar, the last village with electricity. After Bagar, until Marpha village and Jomsom Town, there's nowhere to charge. So, it's good for trekkers to bring a portable solar panel to keep their gadgets powered up during the trek. This way, they can stay connected and navigate safely throughout their journey.
  • How do we obtain a Nepal visa, and what documents do we need for this trek?

We can obtain a Nepal visa online and offline, we can even get an on-arrival visa. There are different types of visas, including student, travel, trekking, climbing, and business visas, with durations ranging from 15 days up to 5 years. During the Dhaulagiri trek, we need an original passport and a photo of passport size, along with Annapurna Conservation permits and a TIMS card.
  • How long does this trek take, and how much does the trek cost?

This trek takes 12 to 18 days, depending on your time and budget, as well as people's physical and mental condition and the weather. The cost also depends on people's interests, ranging from $1,200 up to $6,000.
  • What exercises and training do we need for this trek, and what equipment do we need for this trek?

We need to be physically and mentally prepared first. Take time before trekking, 6 months of daily 1-hour hiking, swimming, and gym sessions are recommended. We need all the trekking equipment; see the list on RP Adventures for details.
  • How high is Dhaulagiri Base Camp, Hidden Valley Camp, French Pass, and Dhampus/Thapa Pass?

Dhaulagiri Base Camp is at 4,800m, Hidden Valley Camp is at 5,000m, French Pass is at 5,360m, and Dhampus/Thapa Pass is at 5,280m.
  • What types of people live in these areas, and how do we reach the trekking point & what transport do we use?

This area experiences very basic economic growth. People living here depend on agriculture and grow some basic food for themselves. To travel from Kathmandu to Pokhara or from Jomsom to Pokhara and Kathmandu, we can use aircraft or, depending on the budget, we can use a private jeep or local bus. We can use night and day buses from Kathmandu to Beni for the trekking point, and local day buses as well. When we return from the trek, we use night or day buses from Marpha to Pokhara and Kathmandu.
  • In the Dhaulagiri Circuit Trek, why do we need to carry our own tent, satellite phone, and medical supplies?

The Dhaulagiri Trek is difficult and takes place in a remote, undeveloped area, making it essential for trekking. That's why, in case we need to make contact, we must carry all our basic things, including a satellite phone, tent, medical supplies, and food. Due to the isolated and difficult nature of the Dhaulagiri Circuit Trek, you must have your own tent, satellite phone, and medical supplies. In the event of an emergency, the absence of infrastructure, and erratic weather in the high-altitude region, these supplies guarantee safety and self-sufficiency.
  • In the Dhaulagiri Circuit Trek, why do people call it Italian Camp, Swiss Camp, Japanese Camp, and Hidden Valley Camp?

This trek is one of the most challenging in Nepal and has been undertaken by different trekking and expedition groups at different times. That's why they are named Italian Camp, Swiss Camp, and Japanese Camp. People call it Hidden Valley because it is one of the dry wine areas and is subject to very strong winds, which is why it's also called Hidden Valley.
  • How high is Mt. Dhaulagiri, and what is the meaning of Dhaulagiri?

Mt. Dhaulagiri is 8,167m tall. The name Dhaulagiri has different interpretations; it is called the "white mountain," making it one of the world's whitest mountains among the 8,000m+ peaks, as not every high peak is perpetually covered in snow. The shape of Dhaulagiri is always seen white with full snow. In our Puranas, it is said to represent a god from the time of Satya Yuga, that era's avatar of Apsara.
  • What type of views can we expect on the Dhaulagiri Circuit Trek?

During this trek, we see a variety of agricultural fields, the Trishuli and Marsyangdi, as well as the Kali Gandaki rivers, valleys, hills, and different mountains. Dhaulagiri range including 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th, Tukuche Peak, Dhampus Peak, Annapurna I, Nilgiri range, Tilicho Peak, Annapurna Fang, Bharha Shikhar, Annapurna South, Himchuli, Mt. Fishtail (Machhapuchhre), Gangapurna, and Annapurna 2nd, 3rd, and 4th can be seen. We can also see Pokhara city, Kathmandu city, lakes, etc.
  • Can solo trekkers easily obtain permits and do the trek?

For the Dhaulagiri Circuit Trek, I cannot recommend going solo for many reasons, but obtaining permits is not an issue.
  • What is the trip money payment process at RP Adventures?

We offer different options for payment, both online and offline. When you book a trip, you are required to deposit 20% of the total amount. After that, when you arrive in Kathmandu, you can pay the remainder by cash or card. If you choose to pay by card, please note that there will be a bank charge of 4% of your total cost. I recommend my guests bring cash to avoid this fee.
  • What age group can do this trek, and can solo trekkers undertake this trek?

Depending on people's interest, anyone from 15 to 60 years old can undertake this trek. In our experience, we have organized many treks in Nepal for people of all ages; there is no age limit. If you are physically and mentally prepared and strong enough, you can do this trek. Solo trekkers can also undertake this trek, both in the season and off-season.
  • Does RP Adventures offer any other types of hiking, tours, trekking, peak climbing, expeditions, rafting, canoeing, paragliding, mountain flights, helicopter tours, and other budget tours?
