Introduction

The Bardia Tiger Tracking Tour journey offers the thrilling opportunity to encounter the magnificent Royal Bengal Tiger in one of Nepal’s most pristine and protected wilderness areas. Located in Lumbini Province of mid-western Nepal, Royal Bardia National Park spans 968 square kilometers, making it the largest and most undisturbed wilderness in the Terai region.

This park is a vital sanctuary for both wildlife and ecosystems. Nearly three-quarters of its area is covered by dense forests, expansive grasslands, and riverine habitats, creating an ideal environment for the park’s most iconic resident—the Royal Bengal Tiger. Established to protect and conserve the habitats of tigers and their prey, Bardia offers one of the highest chances of tiger sightings in Nepal. Unlike many other national parks, Bardia’s remote and unspoiled environment makes it a prime destination for wildlife enthusiasts seeking to witness these majestic creatures in the wild.

History of Bardia National Park

Bardia National Park was officially established in 1988 by the Government of Nepal under the name Royal Bardia National Park, marking the beginning of efforts to conserve the rich biodiversity of the region. The park is situated on the eastern bank of the Karnali River and is bisected by the Babai River, which flows through the park’s heart. Spanning 968 square kilometers, it remains Nepal’s largest and most undisturbed national park in the Terai.

In 1998, a partnership between the Government of Nepal and the private tourism sector was formalized to further develop and market Nepal as a prime wildlife tourism destination. This collaboration laid the foundation for the park’s continued success as a protected area and key tourist attraction.

About Bardia National Park

Nestled in the southern Tarai belt of Lumbini Province, Bardia National Park is a beacon of natural beauty and wildlife conservation. Covering an impressive 968 square kilometers, it is home to some of Nepal’s most iconic wildlife, including the Royal Bengal Tiger. The dense forests, grasslands, and riverine ecosystems make Bardia a crucial habitat for not only tigers but also a wide variety of other species.

Beyond the tiger, Bardia is a haven for a diverse array of wildlife. Visitors can encounter Asian elephants, greater one-horned rhinoceroses, and a rich variety of bird species. The park’s unique landscape also provides a rich environment for flora and fauna, making it a haven for nature lovers and photographers alike.

Though sightings of the Bengal Tiger are never guaranteed, Bardia is one of the best places in Nepal to catch a glimpse of this magnificent predator in its natural habitat. Those who venture on a jungle safari are often rewarded with the rare and thrilling opportunity to witness not only tigers but other incredible species as well, making it a truly unique and unforgettable wildlife experience.

Aquatic Wonders and Cultural Immersion

In addition to its terrestrial wildlife, Bardia National Park also offers a rare aquatic adventure. The Geruwa River, a channel of the mighty Karnali River, provides opportunities for rafting, and visitors may even spot the rare Gangetic river dolphins. This adds an unexpected twist to the park’s already rich wildlife offerings, offering both a thrilling and serene exploration of the region’s water ecosystems.

Bardia also offers visitors a chance to explore the rich Tharu culture that has existed in harmony with the park’s wildlife for centuries. Homestays with local Tharu communities allow for an immersive cultural experience, where visitors can learn about the traditions, lifestyles, and deep-rooted connections between the Tharu people and the natural environment they share with the park’s wildlife.

Best Time to Visit

The best times to visit Bardia National Park are between mid-September to mid-December and mid-February to May. During these months, the weather is more conducive to wildlife sightings and exploration, offering comfortable temperatures and clearer views of the park’s landscapes.

An Unforgettable Journey

Bardia National Park is not just a destination—it is a journey into the heart of Nepal’s natural world, where the Royal Bengal Tiger reigns supreme and a tapestry of biodiversity unfolds in spectacular fashion. Whether you are captivated by the thrill of tiger sightings, the gentle grace of the Asian elephants and rhinoceroses, or the cultural richness of the Tharu people, Bardia promises an adventure that will leave an indelible mark on your soul.
