Introduction

Annapurna Base Camp Trek, also known as ABC Trek, leads to exciting adventurous walks, enjoying great dramatic scenery and exploring mountain villages, amidst immense colorful cultures in the close harmony of the massif Annapurna Himalayas. This is the shortest and most picturesque area around the whole Himalayan range.

The amazing fact is that only mountain base camps above 8,000 meters have the facilities of a nice, cozy lodge. They accommodate all trekkers, providing great facilities with good rooms that face views of the surrounding giant snow-capped peaks. Another uniqueness of Mt. Annapurna-I is that it is the world’s 10th-highest peak. Also among the first eight thousand mountains ever summited in the history of mountaineering.

It was climbed by the French Expedition on June 3rd, 1950, ahead of Mt. Everest’s conquest by Tenzing and Hillary. Annapurna Base Camp, besides its classic mountaineering history, is one of the most exciting places to experience. ABC Trek Itinerary in a Brief

The adventure to Annapurna Base Camp  trek. The tour starts in lovely Pokhara, a renowned tourist destination in Nepal. A short drive takes you to the high-hill village of Ghandruk, the home of the brave Gorkha and Gurung tribes. From Ghandruk village, the walk follows to another large village, Gurung, at Chomrong, the gateway to Annapurna Base Camp. The route follows up and down to follow the Modi River upstream right to its glacial source at Annapurna Sanctuary.

Then reaching the foot of Mt. Annapurna-I at base camp, the highest spot of the adventure. The Annapurna Base Camp and Sanctuary are encircled by an array of snow peaks. Annapurna Himalaya with a range of peaks (A-I, II, III, IV), Annapurna South, Annapurna Fang, and Vara Shikar. The best time and right seasons for wonderful Annapurna Base Camp trek are spring and autumn.

Spring (March to May)

The spring season begins from March to May, when most days are full of sunshine. Where wildflowers are in seasonal bloom, like the rhododendron of various species and colors, it makes the hills lively. Sometimes the afternoon can get overcast with a few showers and cold mornings and nights, altitude-wise.

Autumn (September to December)

The next best season is autumn/fall, which spans from September to November. Most days are fine and crystal clear, perfect for views and pleasant walks, albeit with cold mornings, late afternoons, and nighttime temperatures. Snowfall can be expected above 2,000 m occasionally. Those interested can enjoy trekking during the winter, particularly around Christmas and New Year’s holidays. Days offer clearer views and are suitable for walks, despite very cold mornings, late afternoons, and nights. Days are short due to limited sunlight hours, but it’s an enjoyable time for outdoor activities.

  • Day 01: Arrival in Kathmandu, Pick up to hotel -1,300m

    On arrival at Kathmandu, Nepal International Airport, check the Nepal Standard Time, which is 5 hours and 45 minutes ahead of GMT. Outside the air terminal, our staff from RP Adventures will greet and receive you for a short drive to your hotel. The hotel is located in the hub of Kathmandu, on arrival, check into your lovely rooms. Then meet with other members of the trek for a briefing regarding Annapurna Base Camp trekking. After collecting all the useful information and trek details, a group welcome dinner in nice authentic Nepali Restaurants an introduction to Nepali foods and cultures.

  • Day 02: Fly from Kathmandu to Pokhara 850m - 30 Min

    In the morning, you have the option of flying to Pokhara or taking an exciting overland journey that takes more than 6 hours, depending on the road conditions of the busiest highway in the country. The drive offers an interesting opportunity to observe the in-depth rural farm life of Nepal. You will pass through many farm villages and towns, heading towards the beautiful city of Pokhara in the Mid-West. Pokhara is blessed with the natural beauty of lakes, rolling hills, and the peaks of the Annapurna Himalayas. The hotels in Pokhara are situated by the famous and serene Phewa Lake, a great place to explore. Alternatively, you can opt for a 30-minute panoramic flight from Kathmandu to Pokhara.

  • Day 03: Drive from Pokhara to Tirkhethunga - 03 hrs trek to Ulari 2100m - 03 hrs

    Enjoy the first day of the adventure by taking a 3-hour drive beyond Pokhara city and the valley. The morning ride on a pleasant highway lasts for an hour, offering views of the Annapurna and Manaslu Himalayas. The drive then diverts from the main highway towards Nayapul town and Bhirethati, a lovely village. Drive from Pokhara to Tirkhethunga by private vehicle; we can see Gurung villages, thatched-roof houses, stone-roof houses, and climb 3,200 stairs.

  • Day 04: Trek to Ghorepani /poon hill 2,800m - 05 hrs

    From Ulleri village, after a pleasant overnight, a morning walk leads on a gradual uphill path through a lovely, cool, forested path. A pleasant walk with a few steep sections to encounter, and then reach the entrance to the Welcome Gate of Ghorepani village. Enter the main gate and then make a short climb to Ghorepani Deurali, which stands atop a beautiful rhododendron and pine forest. The air gets cooler in a moderate-sized village located at the base of Poon Hill after checking into your nice rooms. Enjoy the grand views of the Dhaulagiri Himal range and the peaks of the Annapurna Himalayas.

  • Day 05: Trek to Tadapani 2,600m - 06 hrs

    Morning sun rises in Poon Hill, trek to Tadapani Rise as early as possible at pre-morning dawn and climb for an hour to Poon Hill. On reaching Poon Hill, the hard, steep climb rewards you with stunning views of the sunrise and a 360°-wide panorama of the Himalayan range of peaks. The views of the world's three highest peaks, Mt. Dhaulagiri, Manaslu, and Annapurna, in the Himalayan range with the majestic Machhapuchare Himal. After an enjoyable, refreshing morning, head back to Ghorepani for breakfast, and then continue the walk, heading uphill. Although it took a steep climb of an hour or more to reach the top ridge at Deurali, a small settlement with a few lodges and tea shops offers grand views of the surrounding snow-capped peaks. After a refreshing break, walk downhill into a gorge to Bhanthati, another nice settlement with several lodges and restaurants. After lunch, an afternoon walk leads to a short descent to a stream within dense woods. Then, after a steep climb for an hour or less, to Tadapani for an overnight stop.   • Day 06: Trek to Chhumrung 2,250m - 05 hrs

    "From Tadapani, while enjoying breakfast with morning grand views of snow peaks, our walk slowly brings us to the Gurung village. The path from Tadapani winds through lovely dense woods and descends to the picturesque Gurung village along the ABC Way."

  • Day 07: Trek to Dovan 2,130 m via Bamboo 2,500m - 06 hrs

    In the morning, the walk from Chomrong goes downhill towards a river. After crossing the bridge, the climb leads to a high ridge. Upon reaching Sinuwa Danda, a small settlement with a few tea houses and shops, the path continues, gradually winding through the forest. As the walk progresses amidst lovely rhododendron and pine trees, there's a short descent to Bamboo, an open area with a number of simple lodges and restaurants where you can stop for lunch with the sound of the Modi River nearby. The bamboo settlement is surrounded by dense trees and some bamboo thickets, giving it its name. From here, there's a gradual uphill walk to Dovan for the overnight halt, located above the Modi River gorge.

    We will travel through bamboo, oak, and rhododendron forests on our four-hour walk from Dovan to Deurali. We will cross two tiny bridges and pass the Himalaya Hotel along the route. A variety of plant and animal species, including snow leopards, deer, wild pigs, etc., will be visible to us. After that, we'll go up to the hanging rock known as Hinko Cave.   • Day 09: Trek to Annapuran Base Camp 4,130m - 06 hrs

    Morning-facing super views of Annapurna-I,and Huin-Chuli peaks with Machhapuchare Himal. After breakfast, a short morning walk of a few hours is needed to reach our main highlight and destination, Annapurna Base Camp. The walk leads to a short climb on a grassy slope, reaching an open field and a plateau. Famously known as Annapurna Sanctuary, it was named by early pioneers and explorers due to its extreme beauty. Bounded by tiers of giant snow-capped peaks, the walk leads on a gradual path with a short climb to Annapurna Base Camp. The highest point of the adventure, as well as the only base camp with facilities for cozy lodge comfort, Enjoy the rest of the day, having lunch in the close harmony of the stupendous scenery of towering peaks. Annapurna base camp, situated right beneath the big icy wall of Mt. Annapurna-I at 8,091 m high. Enjoy overlooking the array of peaks that surround you at Annapurna base camp.

  • Day 10: Trek back to bomboo 2,100m - 07 hrs

    In the morning, after enjoying breakfast, we embark on the longest day of our adventure. We head towards the end of the Sanctuary, to Machhapuchare Base Camp. From there, we descend to Deurali and then ascend to the Himalaya Hotel. As the walk continues, we reach back into the lush green forest and stop overnight at Bamboo.

  • Day 11: Trek to Jhinu/Danda a place with hot spring 1,700m - 06 hrs

    Leaving the Modi River gorge from Bamboo, with short, steep climb to a place called Khuldi Ghar. In the early days, it existed as check-post, at present, it is in ruin. The walk follows through the forest, reaching Sinuwa Danda. From here, cross a river with a steep climb on stone steps to Chomrong village for lunch. After lunch, go downhill for an hour to Jhinu village for the last overnight around the hills of the Annapurna Himalayas. At Jhinu, enjoy a refreshing dip and a bath in a natural hot spring pool.

  • Day 13: Fly From Pokhara to Kathmandu-journey (½ hour flight).and drive to hotel - 1,300m

    Drive or fly to Kathmandu on a 6-hour journey (½-hour flight). Morning after early breakfast, an interesting overland journey to Kathmandu. The drive leads on a busy highway, following the Trisuli River for a few hours, and then the drive climbs on a winding road. Then, after reaching the Kathmandu valley and back into the city after an exciting drive, check into your hotels. The rest of the afternoon is at leisure for individual activities.

  • How do I prepare for ABC trek?

    The trek to Annapurna Base Camp includes walking for many days on rough ground up in the mountains. It's a good idea to start getting in shape a few months before the trek to build up your endurance and stamina. You can do things like hiking, jogging, cycling, and climbing stairs to make your heart and legs stronger. You can also add exercises that make your whole body stronger. Some examples are pull-ups, push-ups, planks, and squats.
  • Is ABC trek risky?

To prevent altitude sickness, it is advisable to rest and acclimatize properly. Drinking hot water and soup can also be beneficial. Additionally, it is important to avoid smoking and consuming hard drinks.
  • Is there facility of electricity and Wi-Fi in this Trek?

    Every teahouse where you will stay overnight on the Annapurna base camp trek has electricity. For a small fee, you can use solar panels and micro-hydropower to recharge your phones, laptops, and iPads. We do not advise bringing your laptop along the trekking trail as there are no free hotspots for Wi-Fi. While some teahouses do charge an hourly fee for Wi-Fi, don't expect fast connectivity on the remote trails.
  • How is the weather during the trek?

    Seasons affect the weather at Annapurna Base Camp in different ways. Even in the summer, the snow-capped Himalayan region never gets very hot. The highest temperature experienced during the day is 25°C, or 77°F, while the lowest recorded nighttime temperature is -20°C, or -4°F, on occasion. In comparison to the base camp, the lower hiking regions are significantly warmer over the course of the trekking journey. In the spring, it can get quite warm, especially during the day when there are no clouds or snowflakes.
  • In case of the emergency what possibility have Annapurna Base Camp Trek?

    In emergency cases, typically, primary treatment is administered first. Subsequently, an assessment of the condition is made, and depending on the severity, the individual may be transported via helicopter rescue or carried to a hospital in Pokhara or Kathmandu.
  • Do I need all trekking gear with me?

    Yes, you need all trekking equipment and gear, such as trekking boots, gloves, down jacket, crampons, ice axe, and trekking poles. Proper gear is essential, especially during bad weather or from December to February (winter time).
  • Do we get snow and ice during the ABC trek?

    Normally, during bad weather and winter, we experience snow and ice at other time, there is no snow.
  • How is the drinking water condition in this trek?

    Normally we cannot buy plastic mineral water bottles, instead, we have to carry our own bottle. Every teahouse provides safe drinking water or hot water at a cost ranging from $1 to $5.
