To visit Halesi Mahadev, you’ll need to drive for about nine hours from Kathmandu along a narrow road. The journey covers a distance of 222 km and passes through several towns like Dhulikhel, Nepalthok, Khurkot, Ghurmi, and Okhaldhunga before reaching Khotang. Once there, you’ll spend the day resting at a hotel in Halesi. The next day, you’ll visit the temple, offer prayers, and then drive back to Kathmandu along the same route.
Halesi Mahadev is located in the Khotang Region of Nepal, at an elevation ranging from 3,100 ft to 4,734 ft above sea level. According to legend, the cave at Halesi is where Lord Shiva hid to escape the demon Bhasmasur. The cave is situated 67 feet below ground level, and its entrance resembles a half-moon facing east.
Inside the cave, there’s a sacred shrine housing a two-foot-tall Shiva Linga. The entrance to the shrine is narrow, with two supporting points close to each other on the north side of the Linga. It’s believed that wrongdoers cannot pass through this narrow entrance.
Worshippers believe that offering prayers at Halesi Mahadev brings blessings of success, knowledge, and wisdom.
